Makoto Kowata (木幡 真琴, Kowata Makoto) is a young witch and the main protagonist of Flying Witch.
Appearance[]
Makoto is a teenage girl with long, black hair that is styled in a hime cut with one strip of hair set in front of her shoulders on either side while the rest of her hair is behind her back, light tan skin and large green eyes.
She tends to wear baggier clothes but she changes her outfits frequently. She tends to wear peach and blue colors a lot with black tights/pantyhose. She'll have a brown purse with her when she goes out to the store or on a walk.
Personality[]
Makoto is a polite somewhat clumsy young girl who is happy and cheerful, Makoto is known for getting lost, even getting lost going around her own home. Despite that however, Makoto is a very kind and sweet person, and is always trying her best. She loves her cat familiar Chito.
History[]
At the beginning of the series, Makoto left her home to live with Kei and Chinatsu and learn how to use her powers, at first, she hasn't been doing well, but after Akane comes over, she was able to use her powers with no trouble, and by the end of the series, Makoto makes Chinatsu her very own Witch Robe, has fun in the festival, and now trains Chinatsu to be a witch like herself, as Akane did with her.
Abilities[]
As with all witches, Makoto can cast spells of all kinds and fly on a broomstick- although she isn't the best at it.
Makoto's attribute is Darkness, making her especially adept at creation. This includes the creation of objects such as robes and new magical spells.
Relationships[]
In terms of relationships, Makoto is friendly towards Akane Kowata who tries to fit the 'little sister' stereotype. Towards Nao Ishiwatari, she is friendly and caring, even showing Nao of her radish garden to help Nao's desire to be skinnier. Towards Chinatsu Kuramoto, she usually lets her in on witchy secrets, trying her best to be a 'mentor' along with Akane. Towards Kei Kuramoto, she shows the same friendliness that she uses with Nao.
Etymology[]
- The name Makoto means "real, genuine" (真) (ma) and "Japanese harp" (琴) (koto).
- Makoto's surname Kowata means "tree, wood" (木) (ko) and "flag" (幡) (hata/wata).
Trivia[]
- Makoto is very similar to Kiki, the main protagonist of the anime film, Kiki's Delivery Service, seeing as:
- Both are female witches that are under training.
- Both are the main protagonist of their respective media.
- Both have black colored hair.
- Both are best friends with a teenage boy.
- Both have black colored pet cat that fallows them.
- In Persona 5 and its Anime counter part, one of the main characters in both the game and show is also name Makoto.
- Coincidentally, Flying Witch was made around the same time of year that Persona 5 was also made
- In the first two episodes of Flying Witch, there's a running gag with Makoto, and that involves her going to wrong places.
